About Us

Sos Animales Salobreña was founded in 2019 by Gema and Gersom, a couple from Spain, and Saskia, originally from the Netherlands, who has lived in Salobreña (Costa Tropical) for nearly 15 years. Together, they shared a deep passion for helping animals in need.

Sadly, in 2023, tragedy struck when Gersom passed away in an accident. Since then, Saskia has continued to lead the organization, supported by a dedicated team of volunteers.

Our rescue efforts are now focused on the nearby town of Almuñécar, where our shelter Refugio Cantalobos is located. With the support of the Almuñécar Town Hall, we’re able to help cover some of the costs involved in rescuing and caring for abandoned dogs in the area.

Our Shelter: Refugio Cantalobos

Thanks to the generosity of Emilio Varela, we’ve been able to use the Cantalobos shelter since 2021. Emilio not only offered us the space but also contributes to water and energy costs — support for which we are incredibly grateful.

Currently, we care for around 150 dogs at the shelter. The facility is run entirely by volunteers, with Laia and Oliver living on-site full-time to manage the daily care and coordination of the team.

In order to carry out our work and take care of them as they deserve, we need to find more donations, godfathers and godmothers, members and  solidary companies.

Because with the minimum compensation we receive from the City Council we do not cover even 20% of all the expenses that we have to attend to.

Our Volunteers

We’re proud to welcome volunteers from all over the world who dedicate their time, energy, and love to our animals. From walking and feeding to cleaning and socializing, their contribution is what keeps the shelter  going.
