An important notice about the future of the Cantalobos Refuge
CLOSING
For the past few months, we have not accepted any more dogs at the shelter. We continue to care for those already with us, but we cannot take on new admissions.
Although we are still caring for around 85 dogs at Cantalobos, the shelter's future has become too uncertain for us to continue.
The shelter's facilities do not belong to us; they are currently being sold by the owner, and there is no guarantee of what will happen to them.
On the other hand, the Town Hall does not cover the operating costs needed to run a shelter. Without a clear commitment to cover these enormous costs, we simply cannot continue relying solely on our limited funds.
Furthermore, there is no plan in place to prevent the influx of abandoned dogs on the streets, the litters of puppies that appear next to the bins, or the hunters and farmers that abandon their dogs, who become semi-feral and create unnecessary problems and puppies getting born.
It is a fight against windmills, one for which we no longer have the energy.
This is an extremely difficult time for our team. We are grateful to all the volunteers, adopters, and supporters who have stood by us over the years. Your compassion and dedication have changed countless lives, and we will be eternally grateful.

What will happen to the 85 dogs currently at Cantalobos?
We will continue caring for them and looking for adoptions for them during this stage.

How long will the shelter remain open?
Our intention is to continue caring for the dogs at least until the end of 2026, while we look for a long-term solution. We still need volunteers during this time.
